A Conversation with Councillor Tina Petrow:

Navigating Life After High School

 Written by: Lynn M.

Off The Grid Youth had the honour of welcoming Councillor Tina Petrow to our facility for an inspiring and deeply impactful conversation about life after high school. Her presence was not only a privilege, but a reminder of the importance of mentorship, resilience, and honest dialogue with today’s youth.

Councillor Petrow shared her personal journey with openness and authenticity. She reflected on her own experiences before attending university, including a serious medical challenge that delayed her post-secondary plans. Her story was a powerful testament to the idea that success is not always linear, and that detours in life can often lead to growth, purpose, and unexpected opportunity.

In an intimate discussion, she asked each of us to reflect on our fears about the future—about the unknowns that follow graduation. Her compassion and willingness to listen reminded us that it’s okay to not have everything figured out. Through her own example, she encouraged us to embrace the process, trust our pace, and remember that there is no single path to fulfillment.

She also offered a glimpse into her current life as a city councillor—what it means to serve the community, the challenges that come with public leadership, and the importance of staying grounded in one’s values. Her words were not only informative but also empowering. She emphasized that no matter where life takes us, authenticity, patience, and perseverance are what truly guide us forward.

Councillor Petrow’s visit left a lasting impact on all of us. Her warmth, honesty, and encouragement reminded us that our journeys are uniquely our own—and that we are allowed to take our time, make mistakes, and grow at our own pace.

We are truly grateful for her time, wisdom, and presence. Her visit affirmed the values at the heart of Off The Grid Youth: community, connection, and the courage to explore who we are and who we are becoming.
