A Night of Film, Friendship, and Inspiration
Written by: Lynn M

Last night, Off The Grid Youth had the incredible opportunity to attend the Calgary Film Festival as a group—an experience that left each of us feeling inspired, connected, and deeply moved. Being part of a club that values creativity, growth, and authentic community, it was an honor to witness firsthand how powerful storytelling can be when shared in the right space.
The feature film of the evening was Fight Like a Girl, directed by Matthew Leutwyler. From the opening scene to the final credits, the film was gripping, raw, and emotionally layered. It followed the story of a young woman navigating her way through trauma, injustice, and ultimately healing—using boxing as both a metaphor and outlet for her strength. The film did not shy away from difficult topics, but it approached them with sensitivity and purpose, offering not just a powerful narrative, but also a message of hope.
But what made the night even more special was not just the film—it was the atmosphere around it. The festival buzzed with energy, and people from all walks of life came together to celebrate cinema. As a group, we felt welcomed and embraced. Many of us found ourselves in unexpected conversations, making genuine connections with other attendees—some filmmakers, others just fellow movie-lovers who were curious about the club and what we stand for.
There was a real sense of openness and kindness in the air. People were approachable, warm, and eager to connect. Whether it was a short exchange in the lobby, a deep talk after the screening, or a laugh shared during the Q&A, we felt like we were part of something greater—a creative community that encourages dialogue, compassion, and growth.
For Off The Grid Youth, this night wasn’t just about watching a movie. It was about stepping into a space where stories have the power to change lives, where young people can be seen and heard, and where friendships can be sparked through a shared love of art and meaning.
We left the Calgary Film Festival not just entertained, but inspired—to keep showing up for one another, to keep telling stories that matter, and to keep building bridges wherever we go.
